Microsoft has quietly extended hotpatch update support for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition through October 2027, one year beyond the operating system’s mainstream end-of-support date of October 2026. The change takes effect immediately, and the existing monthly hotpatch cadence remains unchanged.
What Changes, and What Does Not
The extension applies only to systems running the Datacenter: Azure Edition variant that are already enrolled in hotpatch updates. Organizations running the standard Datacenter, Standard, or Essentials editions are unaffected by this announcement; all four editions retain their existing extended support deadline of October 14, 2031.
Hotpatching works by applying security fixes directly to the in-memory code of running processes, eliminating the need to reboot after each monthly security update. This reduces servicing windows, limits operational disruptions, and narrows the gap between patch release and deployment. That said, certain update categories still require a restart, including Windows non-security updates and third-party components such as .NET patches.
Broader Hotpatch Rollout
Hotpatching has been available for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition since February 2022, when Microsoft announced general availability for Azure Edition core virtual machines. The technology has been expanding steadily since then:
- Public preview for Windows Server 2025 began in September 2024.
- Windows 11 24H2 and Windows 365 entered public preview in November 2024.
- General availability for Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 on x64 systems launched in April 2025.
- Starting with the May 2026 security update, Microsoft began enabling hotpatch by default for all eligible devices managed through Microsoft Graph API and Microsoft Intune.
Operational Impact
For security and operations teams managing Azure-hosted Windows Server 2022 workloads, the extension provides an additional 12 months of restart-free monthly security updates under the same servicing model already in place. Organizations that have not yet enrolled eligible systems in hotpatch updates should review their configuration to ensure they benefit from the extended coverage window before mainstream support lapses in October 2026.
