Anthropic has confirmed that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on its two most capable Claude models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, clearing the way for the company to restore broader access starting Wednesday.
The company announced the development via a post on X, stating it will begin restoring access to Fable 5 the following day and plans to share further updates as the rollout proceeds. Mythos 5, however, will continue to be restricted to a limited set of approved companies rather than made broadly available.
“We’ve received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5,” Anthropic said in its statement. “We’ll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon. We’re grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on redeploying the models.”
Geographic Restrictions Still Uncertain
Key questions remain about the geographic scope of the Fable 5 restoration. It is not yet clear whether access will extend to users outside the United States. Adding to those concerns, references to Know Your Customer (KYC) verification processes were recently spotted on Anthropic’s website, suggesting that access to Fable 5 could initially be limited to U.S.-based users.
The export control episode reflects the growing scrutiny frontier AI models are facing from regulators, particularly around access by foreign nationals. This situation follows earlier reporting that U.S. government officials had asked Anthropic to restrict foreign national access to both Fable and Mythos.
Security professionals and enterprise customers relying on Fable 5 for sensitive workloads should monitor Anthropic’s official channels for specifics on eligibility requirements and rollout timelines, especially if operating in jurisdictions outside the United States.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
